Family Packing List for Lake Tahoe

Lake Tahoe with kids straddles two states (California and Nevada) and two distinct shore vibes — South Lake (casinos, Heavenly, more touristy) and North Lake (Palisades, Northstar, quieter, pricier). The lake sits at 6,225 ft / 1,897 m elevation; the resorts climb to 9,000–10,000 ft.

Quick answer

For a 5-day Lake Tahoe family ski trip, expect -10 to 5°C on slopes with intense altitude UV (you sunburn faster at 9,000 ft). Pack a real layered ski system (base, mid, shell), waterproof gloves, ski helmets (mandatory at most resorts for kids in lessons), goggles, lip balm, SPF 50, and waterproof winter boots for off-slope village walking. Hydrate from day one — altitude headaches hit harder than expected.

What actually matters at Lake Tahoe

  • North Shore vs South Shore are different vacations. South Lake Tahoe (CA / Stateline NV): Heavenly, casinos, more nightlife, more crowded, cheaper. North Shore (Tahoe City, Truckee, Incline): Palisades Tahoe, Northstar, quieter, more upscale, family-oriented. Pick before booking.
  • Altitude UV is intense. The lake sits at 6,225 ft / 1,897 m and resort summits hit 10,000+ ft. SPF 50 zinc-oxide sunscreen, lip balm with SPF, and sunglasses (not just goggles for skiing) — sunburn at this elevation is faster and harder than at sea level.
  • A proper 3-layer ski system beats one big jacket. Merino or synthetic base, fleece or wool mid, waterproof shell. Cotton next-to-skin is a recipe for cold-and-wet kids by lunch.
  • Helmets are mandatory at most US ski resorts for kids in ski school. Most rental shops stock them; bringing well-fitted ones from home saves rental queues.
  • Hydration matters more than usual. Altitude headaches and slowed acclimatization hit hardest day 1–2. Plan extra water + electrolytes; one easy-day on day 1 helps everyone.
  • Off-slope winter boots earn space. Villages, parking lots, and casino corridors are slushy and icy. Ski boots aren't for walking around.
  • Hand warmers are kid magic. The 30-cent disposable hand-warmer packets in gloves keep cold-prone kids on the slopes 2 hours longer.
  • Lake Tahoe gets the most snow of any major US resort area but is also subject to dramatic weather swings — a 60°F day in January is not unheard of, neither is a foot of snow in two hours.

Seasonal things to plan around

  • Dec–MarMajor snow events. Mountain passes (I-80, US-50) can close briefly during storms; chains may be required. Plan flexible arrival/departure days.
  • Year-round (esp. winter)Altitude headaches and slowed acclimatization day 1–2. Easy first day, extra hydration.
  • Late Mar–AprSpring conditions — soft afternoon snow, refreezing nights. Skiing in shorts and t-shirts happens; layer for the morning.
  • Sep–NovWildfire smoke can drift to Tahoe from California fires. Check AirNow before outdoor-heavy days.

Common Lake Tahoe packing mistakes

  • Underestimating altitude. Day 1 fatigue, headaches, and cranky kids are altitude — plan light first day, extra hydration.
  • Skipping zinc-oxide sunscreen. Snow-reflected UV at 9,000 ft burns kids faster than tropical beach sun.
  • Cotton base layers. Wet cotton at -5°C is a recipe for cold misery.
  • Forgetting the off-slope boots. Slushy village walking destroys ski boots and ruins regular sneakers.
  • Underpacking gloves and socks. Kids need dry replacements halfway through long ski days.
  • Single layer + a heavy coat. Inside lodges, restaurants, and chairlifts all demand different warmth — layer instead.

Notes by where you're traveling from

From the US

  • Domestic — fly into RNO (Reno-Tahoe, closest at 1 hr to North Shore), SMF (Sacramento, 2 hrs), or SFO (San Francisco, 3.5 hrs).
  • Most family ski trips need a rental car for resort logistics. Chain control on I-80 in winter is real.
  • Vail Resorts (Heavenly, Northstar, Kirkwood) on Epic Pass; Palisades Tahoe and Sierra-at-Tahoe on Ikon Pass. Pick the multi-resort pass that matches your booking.

From the UK

  • Flight: 11+ hours via SFO connection; no direct UK to RNO.
  • ESTA required: $40.27 (~£32) per person, valid 2 years.
  • Adapter: Type G → A/B.
  • Consider European Alps (closer flight, similar cost) for shorter UK family ski trips.

From Canada

  • Flight: 5 hours direct from Toronto/Montreal to SFO, then drive 3.5 hrs.
  • No ESTA required for Canadian passport holders.
  • Currency: USD.
  • Whistler may be a more practical Canadian family ski destination — see the Whistler page.

From Australia

  • Flight: 14 hours direct from Sydney to LAX or SFO; then connect.
  • ESTA required: $40.27 (~AU$60), valid 2 years.
  • Adapter: Type I → A/B.

FAQ

North Shore or South Shore?

South Lake (CA/NV) is busier, has casinos, more nightlife, and Heavenly is the largest single resort. Lower prices. North Shore (Tahoe City, Truckee, Northstar Village) is quieter, more upscale, more family-villages, with Palisades Tahoe and Northstar as the main resorts. Most first-time families like North Shore for the calmer vibe; budget-conscious families like South Lake.

When is the best time for a family ski trip?

Mid-January through early March for the most reliable snow. Late December and Presidents' Day weekend are peak crowds. Mid-March is great for spring conditions but snowfall is variable. Late November / early December is risky for snow but cheaper.

How does altitude affect kids?

Most kids handle Tahoe altitude (6,000–10,000 ft) fine but day 1 can bring headaches, fatigue, and crankiness. Easy first day at the resort base, extra hydration, and lighter physical activity helps. If a child has any heart, lung, or sickle-cell condition, talk to a pediatrician before the trip.

Do we need our own ski gear?

Most families rent locally — bringing skis, boots, and helmets adds 25–40 lbs of luggage and risks airline damage. Local rental shops (and some hotels) deliver to your room or to the slope. Bring your own warm clothing, gloves, and goggles; rent the hard equipment.

Heavenly, Palisades, or Northstar?

Northstar is most family-beginner-oriented; Heavenly has the biggest mountain and lake views; Palisades Tahoe (formerly Squaw) is best for intermediate-advanced families. For a 5-day trip, many families ski at 2 different resorts via Epic or Ikon multi-resort passes.

Do we need ESTA from the UK / Canada / Australia?

UK and Australia: yes — ESTA at $40.27 per person, valid 2 years. Canada: no ESTA, passport-only entry.
