What actually matters in San Diego
- •San Diego climate is famously mild — 18–25°C most of the year with low humidity and rare extremes. The downside families miss: evenings are reliably cooler, often dropping into the 50s°F. A fleece or hoodie per family member earns its space year-round.
- •June Gloom is real. Marine layer fog through May–July typically blankets coastal areas through 10–11am, even on days that turn into 80°F afternoons. Plan beach mornings late, museum mornings early.
- •Balboa Park holds 17 museums in walking distance — Air & Space, Natural History, the children's Fleet Science Center, plus the San Diego Zoo at the north end. Free Tuesdays for SD residents (extra crowded). A combined Multi-Day Pass saves money for families doing 3+ museums.
- •San Diego Zoo and Safari Park are both world-class but different — the Zoo is in Balboa Park (compact, lots of viewing levels and aerial trams), the Safari Park is 30 min north (drive-through-style enclosures). 1 day each works for a 5-day trip; combined ticket discounts available.
- •Mission Beach, Pacific Beach, La Jolla, and Coronado are all distinct family beach experiences. Coronado has the calmest water and is most family-friendly; La Jolla has tide pools and seal viewing; Mission Beach has the boardwalk and Belmont Park (small amusement park).
- •Tide pools at La Jolla Shores and Cabrillo National Monument require sturdy water-friendly shoes (not flip-flops) and reef-safe sunscreen — barnacles and sharp rocks underfoot.
- •Tijuana day trip is doable but adds passport logistics. Most families skip it; if you do go, bring passports for everyone (including kids), allow 2+ hours for the return border wait, and rideshare instead of driving across.
- •Public transit (MTS Trolley) connects downtown to Mission Valley but most families end up using a rental car. La Jolla, the beaches, and the Safari Park are car-dependent.

Seasonal things to plan around
- May–Jul"June Gloom" — marine fog through 10–11am most mornings. Plan late beach starts; mornings are great for museums.
- Sep–NovWildfire smoke from Southern California fires can drift in. Check AirNow before outdoor-heavy days.
- Year-round~15°F drop from afternoon to evening. Always pack a layer.
- Jul–AugCrowds at Zoo and Safari Park — book timed tickets in advance and arrive at opening.
Common San Diego packing mistakes
- •Packing for "California sun" and forgetting evenings are cool. Even August nights can drop to 60°F at the coast — a hoodie per kid solves it.
- •Booking a beach trip in May–June without realizing about June Gloom. Mornings can be foggy 65°F when forecasts said "sunny."
- •Skipping water shoes for tide pools. La Jolla and Cabrillo tide pools have sharp barnacles; bare feet hurt fast.
- •Underestimating Balboa Park walking. It's a single park but bigger than it looks; kids can do 4–5 miles before lunch on a museum-heavy day.
- •No layer for the Zoo. Even hot inland days can feel cool in shaded animal viewing areas; a cardigan helps.
- •Forgetting passports for a Tijuana side trip. Including babies and kids; nobody crosses without one.

FAQ
Do we really need a hoodie in summer?
Yes. SoCal coastal influence drops evening temps ~15°F after sunset year-round. Even August nights can be 60°F at the coast. One light hoodie or fleece per family member covers it. Coronado, La Jolla, and Pacific Beach all feel notably cooler than inland in evening.
San Diego Zoo or Safari Park — or both?
Different experiences. Zoo: in-city, walk-and-tram, traditional zoo with extensive animal viewing in Balboa Park. Safari Park: 30 min north, drive-through-style enclosures with free-roaming hoofstock. Most families with 5+ days do both. Combination tickets save money. Younger kids (under 5) often prefer the Zoo; older kids and adults sometimes prefer the Safari Park.
How many days for a San Diego family trip?
4–5 days for the city itself, longer if pairing with LA / Disneyland / Legoland. Day 1: arrival + Coronado or Mission Beach. Day 2: Zoo + Balboa Park. Day 3: La Jolla + Cabrillo. Day 4: Safari Park OR LEGOLAND. Day 5: USS Midway + downtown / Gaslamp.
Best base neighborhood for families?
Mission Beach / Pacific Beach: most beach-focused, walkable boardwalk, mid-range. Coronado: quieter, family-friendly, premium. Downtown / Gaslamp: most central for museums but can be busy at night. La Jolla: beautiful but expensive. Mission Valley: cheaper, less character, but good for families on a budget.
Is the Tijuana day trip worth it with kids?
Most families skip it. Adds passport logistics for everyone, 2+ hour border waits returning, and limited family-specific Tijuana sights. If you do go: bring passports for all (including babies), use rideshare from a US side parking lot, and allow most of a day. Adults sometimes go for a half-day food experience; rarely worth it for kid-focused itineraries.
Do we need ESTA from the UK / Canada / Australia?
UK and Australia: yes — ESTA at $40.27 per person, valid 2 years. Canada: no ESTA, passport-only entry.
