Family Packing List for the Pacific Coast Highway

PCH with kids is the iconic California coast drive — San Francisco to LA along Highway 1 with Big Sur cliffs, sea otters, elephant seals, and Hearst Castle. Pack for surprisingly cool ocean weather (Pacific is cold even in summer), Big Sur road-closure risk, and a slower pace than highway driving.

Updated April 2026

Quick answer

For a 5-day Pacific Coast Highway family trip from San Francisco to LA, expect 12–22°C with Pacific fog and wind year-round, road-closure risk through Big Sur (verify Caltrans before driving), and slower pace than expected (Big Sur stretches average 30 mph). Pack a real fleece + windbreaker per person (yes, in summer), broken-in walking shoes, a quality car cooler, and binoculars for whale watching.

What actually matters on PCH

  • Big Sur road closures are an ongoing reality. Highway 1 frequently closes for landslide repair (sometimes for months) — check the Caltrans website (quickmap.dot.ca.gov) within 48 hours of departure. Plan an inland detour via US-101 if needed.
  • Pacific is cold year-round. Ocean water 12–15°C even in summer; "Karl the Fog" rolls in over coastal stretches. Pack a fleece + windbreaker per family member; cotton tees and shorts won't cut it when the fog hits.
  • Drive time vs map time. Big Sur stretches average 30–40 mph due to curves, vista pullouts, and slow trucks. SF to LA via PCH is 8 hours of driving without stops — plan 5 days minimum to enjoy it.
  • Sea otters and elephant seals are the wildlife. Otters at Monterey Bay (Cannery Row, Point Lobos), elephant seals at Piedras Blancas (just north of Hearst Castle, free roadside viewing area). Binoculars per kid help.
  • Hearst Castle requires advance tickets. Multiple tour options (Grand Rooms, Upstairs Suites, etc.); book 4+ weeks ahead in summer. Family-friendly guided tour; allow 4 hours total (shuttle + tour + grounds).
  • 17-Mile Drive (Pebble Beach) is a paid private road ($12 per car) that's genuinely worth it. Lone Cypress, Bird Rock, golf course views; family-friendly stops.
  • Best base nights: Monterey (day 1), Big Sur or Cambria (day 2), San Luis Obispo or Santa Barbara (day 3). Big Sur lodging is famously expensive and books out months ahead.
  • Cell service drops in Big Sur stretches. Download offline maps and music; gas stations are sparse — fill up at Carmel before the Big Sur leg.
  • Plug type is US standard A/B 120V across all stops.
  • A car cooler matters. Pacific stretches have spectacular but limited food options at high prices; sandwich supplies from a Carmel or Cambria grocery store save money and time.

Seasonal things to plan around

  • Year-roundBig Sur road closures from landslides and storm damage. Check quickmap.dot.ca.gov within 48 hours of departure.
  • Jun–AugMarine fog ("Fogust") most mornings — Big Sur clifftop views obscured. Best photo conditions Sep–Oct or early morning.
  • Dec–MarWettest months. Big Sur road closures most likely. Wildflowers spectacular if you time it right.
  • Sep–NovWildfire smoke from California fires can affect air quality. Check AirNow before driving.
  • Dec–MayGray whale migration visible from coastal pullouts. Binoculars matter.

Common PCH packing mistakes

  • Packing for "California sun." PCH is cool and foggy by Pacific standards; layers + windbreaker beat shorts.
  • Not checking Caltrans before driving Big Sur. Road closures happen frequently and add hours of detour.
  • Trying to do SF to LA in 2 days. With kids, 5 days is realistic to actually enjoy the stops.
  • Not booking Hearst Castle ahead. Walk-up rarely works in summer.
  • No binoculars. Sea otters and elephant seals are 30–100 ft away; binoculars 10× the experience.
  • Bringing only flip-flops. Coastal cliff walks and rocky tide pools need real shoes.
  • No gas in Carmel before Big Sur. The 90-mile Big Sur stretch has limited (and expensive) gas.

Notes by where you're traveling from

From the US

  • Domestic — fly into San Francisco (SFO) one-way to Los Angeles (LAX), or vice versa. One-way rental adds fees but is essentially required.
  • No adapter needed.
  • AAA is useful for breakdown coverage in Big Sur stretches.

From the UK

  • Flight: 11 hours direct from London Heathrow to SFO or LAX.
  • ESTA required: $40.27 (~£32) per person, valid 2 years.
  • Adapter: Type G → A/B.
  • International Driving Permit recommended; driving on the right is required.

From Canada

  • Flight: 5 hours direct from Toronto/Montreal to SFO or LAX.
  • No ESTA required.
  • Same plugs and side of road as Canada.

From Australia

  • Flight: 14 hours direct from Sydney to LAX, then drive.
  • ESTA required: $40.27 (~AU$60).
  • Adapter: Type I → A/B.
  • Driving on the right (opposite of Australia). First day takes adjustment; consider starting in southern stretches with simpler routes.
  • International Driving Permit required.

FAQ

How long do we really need for PCH with a family?

5 days minimum SF to LA. 7 days lets you add proper Big Sur hiking, a Hearst Castle morning, and Santa Barbara/Solvang. 3 days isn't enough — you'll spend most of it driving and miss the stops that make the trip worthwhile.

What's the deal with Big Sur road closures?

Highway 1 through Big Sur is built on cliffs that are subject to ongoing landslides. Closures from days to months happen regularly — most recent major closure (early 2024) lasted over a year on parts of the route. Check quickmap.dot.ca.gov before driving. If closed, the inland detour via US-101 adds 2–3 hours and skips Big Sur entirely.

When is the best time of year?

September and October are the best — fog has burned off, wildflowers (some areas), road usually open, smaller crowds than summer. June–August has the most fog. December–March is wettest and has highest closure risk but also has whale migration and elephant seal birthing.

Where should we stay each night?

Day 1: Monterey or Carmel-by-the-Sea. Day 2: Big Sur (limited and pricey — Big Sur River Inn, Glen Oaks Big Sur, Post Ranch) or San Simeon/Cambria (cheaper and more options). Day 3: San Luis Obispo or Santa Barbara. Day 4: Santa Barbara or Solvang. Many families adjust based on Big Sur road status.

Are sea otters / elephant seals reliable to see?

Yes for both. Sea otters are essentially guaranteed at Monterey Bay (Cannery Row dock, Point Lobos). Elephant seals are essentially guaranteed at Piedras Blancas. Bring binoculars. Whale migration (gray whales Dec–May, humpbacks year-round) is more weather-dependent.

Do we need ESTA from the UK / Canada / Australia?

UK and Australia: yes — ESTA at $40.27 per person, valid 2 years. Canada: no ESTA, passport-only entry.
