Family Packing List for Universal Studios Orlando

Universal Orlando with kids is more thrill-ride-focused than Disney, with strict no-loose-article rules on most coasters that force you in and out of free lockers all day. Pack for that, plus Florida heat and afternoon storms.

Updated April 2026

Quick answer

For a 4-day Universal Orlando family trip, expect 80–95°F afternoons with daily summer thunderstorms. Bring small day-packs only — most thrill rides require all loose items including phones to go in free ride-side lockers, and a smaller bag means faster locker turnover. Pack portable chargers, ponchos, broken-in shoes, refillable water bottles, and one light layer per person for the AC-cold queue lines indoors.

What actually matters at Universal Orlando

  • Loose-article rules drive everything. Most thrill coasters and motion simulators (Hagrid's, Velocicoaster, Mummy, Hulk, Forbidden Journey) require ALL loose items — including phones, wallets, fanny packs, and bags — in free locker bins outside the ride. A smaller day-pack means faster locker fits and shorter delays.
  • Bring zip-pocket clothing or a phone tether. The locker process is repetitive; clothes with zip pockets that hold a phone securely save the in-and-out cycle on calmer rides where loose items are still allowed.
  • Universal does not limit stroller size like Disney does, and stroller wagons are allowed. But you cannot bring a stroller into ride queues — children walk through queues hand-held or in a carrier.
  • Express Pass is the equivalent of Disney's Lightning Lane but works differently — most Universal hotel guests get unlimited Express Pass included, which is genuinely the most valuable on-property perk in Orlando theme-park travel. For off-site guests, Express Pass costs $90–$300+ per person per day.
  • Soft-sided coolers under 6"×6"×8.5" are allowed (smaller than Disney). Hard coolers, suitcases, and large duffles are banned.
  • Florida thunderstorms hit nearly daily June–September. Coaster-heavy parks close more rides during lightning than Disney does — a poncho per family member and flexibility to switch indoor (Diagon Alley, Hogsmeade castle interiors) saves the day.
  • Wizarding World of Harry Potter spans both parks (Diagon Alley in Universal Studios, Hogsmeade in Islands of Adventure) — the Hogwarts Express train ride between them requires a Park-to-Park ticket.
  • Volcano Bay is the water park. Bring water shoes; lava-rock concrete heats up enough to burn bare feet in summer.

Seasonal things to plan around

  • Jun–SepDaily afternoon thunderstorms; outdoor coasters close briefly during lightning. Ponchos and indoor backups (Diagon Alley, Mummy, Forbidden Journey) save the day.
  • Jun–NovAtlantic hurricane season. Rare full-park closures but flights and itineraries can shift. Travel insurance worth considering.
  • Jul–AugHeat 90°F+ with high humidity. Locker logistics + heat make midday especially draining; plan indoor restaurant breaks.
  • Halloween Horror Nights (Sep–Nov)Some sections close in the afternoon to set up for the separately-ticketed evening event. Verify which days are HHN nights.

Common Universal Orlando packing mistakes

  • Bringing a 30L+ daypack. Lockers fill up; a smaller bag means faster ride-side locker access and less queue time.
  • Forgetting that phones are loose articles. They go in the locker on most coasters — no exceptions, no in-pocket workarounds.
  • Skipping Express Pass without checking on-site hotel rates. A Universal hotel package often includes Express Pass for free, sometimes coming out cheaper than off-site + paid Express.
  • Park-to-Park ticket question — if you skip it, you cannot ride the Hogwarts Express, which is a major draw for Harry Potter fans.
  • Single phone, no charger. Universal app handles tickets, mobile orders, and locker reservations.
  • Underestimating loose-article logistics. Plan for 5–10 minutes per coaster of locker-in/locker-out time on top of queue.

Notes by where you're traveling from

From the US

  • Drive or fly into Orlando International (MCO). Universal is closer to MCO than Disney is — about 20 minutes by rideshare.
  • Universal does not run free airport transfers. Mears Connect or rideshare are the standard options.
  • On-site Universal hotels (Royal Pacific, Hard Rock, Portofino Bay) include unlimited Express Pass — this is the most valuable single perk in Orlando theme-park travel.

From the UK

  • Flight: 9–10 hours direct from London or Manchester to Orlando. Same routes as Disney.
  • ESTA required: $40.27 (~£32) per person, valid 2 years or until passport expiry. Apply via esta.cbp.dhs.gov.
  • Adapter: Type G → A/B (US plugs, 120V).
  • UK package operators (Virgin Holidays, Attraction World, BA Holidays) often bundle Universal tickets at competitive rates.

From Canada

  • Flight: 3 hours direct from Toronto/Montreal to Orlando.
  • No ESTA required for Canadian passport holders entering the US — passport only.
  • Currency: USD. Apple Pay / contactless cards accepted everywhere.

From Australia

  • Flight: 22+ hours typically with one stop (LAX or Hawaii common transit).
  • ESTA required: $40.27 (~AU$60) per person, valid 2 years or until passport expiry.
  • Adapter: Type I → A/B (US plugs, 120V).
  • Plan a recovery day before parks — Universal's thrill-heavy days are tough on jet-lagged kids.

Venue and attraction rules

Universal Studios Florida (entry)
Bag scan at entry. No size limit on regular bags but soft-sided coolers must be ≤ 6×6×8.5 in. Most thrill rides require lockering all loose items.
Islands of Adventure
Same entry rules. Hagrid's and Velocicoaster have especially strict no-loose-article enforcement — even small wallets in pockets get refused.
Epic Universe (2025)
Universal's newest park. Same loose-article and bag rules; verify current Express Pass coverage as it's still being adjusted post-launch.
Volcano Bay
Water park. Water shoes essential — concrete burns in summer. Lockers available at extra cost. Park gets at-capacity early on hot summer days; arrive at opening.
CityWalk
Free entry, no ticket needed. Restaurants and shops; bag rules still apply at the security points to either park.

FAQ

Is Express Pass worth it at Universal?

For most families on a 1–2 day visit, yes — Universal's queues run longer than Disney's and Express Pass dramatically cuts wait times. The trick is the on-site hotel angle: Royal Pacific, Hard Rock, and Portofino Bay all include unlimited Express Pass with the room. For a family of four, this often comes out cheaper than off-site lodging plus paid Express. Lower-tier on-site hotels (Cabana Bay, Aventura, Sapphire Falls) do not include it.

How do the loose-article lockers actually work?

On most thrill coasters, you scan your park ticket at a kiosk, get assigned a free locker for the duration of your ride (typically 60–90 minutes), put everything in including phones and wallets, and walk through metal-detector-style scanners before boarding. The locker is free for that ride only — overstay and a fee kicks in. It adds 5–10 minutes per ride; build that into queue planning.

Universal Orlando vs Walt Disney World for kids?

Universal is more thrill-ride-focused, more for ages 7+. Younger kids enjoy Seuss Landing, Curious George, and the Wizarding World shops, but most coasters have height requirements (40–54 inches). Disney spans the full age range better. Many families do 2–3 days at Disney plus 2 days at Universal as a combined Orlando trip.

Do we need the Park-to-Park ticket?

For most Wizarding World fans, yes — the Hogwarts Express ride between Diagon Alley (Universal Studios) and Hogsmeade (Islands of Adventure) requires it, and that ride is part of the experience. The cost difference is roughly $60–$70 per person across a multi-day ticket.

How does Epic Universe change the trip?

Epic Universe opened in May 2025 and significantly expands what to plan for. Many families now budget 3–4 Universal days instead of 2. Verify Express Pass coverage at Epic Universe specifically — coverage and operations were still being adjusted into 2026.

Do we need ESTA from the UK / Canada / Australia?

UK and Australia: yes — ESTA at $40.27 per person, valid 2 years, apply via esta.cbp.dhs.gov. Canada: no ESTA, passport-only entry. Apply at least a few weeks before flying.
