Family Packing List for Walt Disney World
Walt Disney World with kids is a walking-and-waiting trip in Florida heat with strict bag rules and a phone-dependent logistics system. Pack for stamina and the rules, not for outfit variety.
Updated April 2026
Quick answer
For a 5-day Walt Disney World family trip, expect 80–95°F afternoons June–September with daily thunderstorms, and 60–75°F in winter. Your day-bag must fit Disney's 24×15×18 inch limit, your stroller must be under 31×52 inches, and stroller wagons are banned. Pack a portable charger (the My Disney Experience app drains phones), broken-in walking shoes, ponchos, refillable water bottles, and at minimum one cooling towel per kid in summer.

What actually matters at Walt Disney World
- •Disney's bag-size limit is 24×15×18 inches (61×38×46 cm) — wheels or no wheels, that's the cap. Most popular tourist backpacks pass; an oversized cooler or large duffel does not. The rule is enforced at every park entry.
- •Strollers must be under 31 inches wide and 52 inches long. Stroller wagons (push-pull hybrids) are banned entirely — even ones marketed as "stroller-style." Families show up with these and get turned away. If you need a wagon-style for naps, plan to rent on-site or rethink the gear.
- •A portable charger is not optional. The My Disney Experience app holds your tickets, Lightning Lane reservations, mobile food orders, ride wait times, photo passes, and maps — your phone is at 20% by 2pm without a battery pack. Plan one 10,000+ mAh per phone in the family.
- •Lightning Lane Multi Pass ($15–$45 per person per day) is the rebranded Genie+ — buy it for big-park days at Magic Kingdom or Hollywood Studios. Single Pass ($10–$25 per ride) covers TRON Lightcycle / Run and Seven Dwarfs Mine Train, which are not in Multi Pass. Resort guests can book up to 7 days early; everyone else 3 days, 7am Eastern.
- •Step counts run 8–12 miles per adult per day across the parks. New shoes are a recipe for blisters by lunch on day two — break them in at home, or pack moleskin and a backup pair.
- •Florida thunderstorms are a near-daily afternoon event from June through September. A compact poncho per family member beats umbrellas in wind and is allowed on rides; ponchos at the parks cost $10+ each, so packing them saves real money.
- •Cooling towels (the wet-and-flick kind) cost a few dollars at home and are sold for $20+ in the parks. One per kid in summer makes long queue waits much more bearable.
- •Refillable water bottles are allowed and any quick-service counter will give you free ice water — saving roughly $5 per drink per person per day. Florida humidity makes this matter more than people expect.
- •Indoor AC at restaurants and dark rides runs cold even when it's 95°F outside. A light layer per kid prevents the AC-hot-AC cycle from wearing them out.

Seasonal things to plan around
- Jun–SepDaily afternoon thunderstorms; many outdoor rides close briefly during lightning. Ponchos and a flexible day plan help.
- Jun–NovAtlantic hurricane season. Disney rarely closes, but flights and itineraries can be affected. Travel insurance worth considering.
- Jul–AugHeat 90°F+ with high humidity. Mornings + evenings outdoors, midday at indoor attractions or pool, hydrate constantly.
- Late Dec / Spring break / EasterPeak crowds and highest Lightning Lane prices. Same parks at half-crowd in early Dec or mid-Jan.
Common Walt Disney World packing mistakes
- •Bringing a stroller wagon. Banned at every entrance regardless of brand or marketing — families have been turned away. Confirm your specific model is a stroller, not a wagon, before flying.
- •Packing a bag over 24×15×18. Security pulls oversized bags at the front gate; you're walking back to the car or hotel.
- •Single phone, no charger. Lightning Lane reservations, mobile orders, and photopass all live in the app. A dead phone wrecks the day.
- •New shoes for the trip. Disney is the worst place to break in footwear — supportive sneakers worn for at least two weeks at home perform best.
- •Skipping ponchos in summer. Daily 30-minute thunderstorms June–September catch poncho-less families every visit.
- •Underestimating walking. Magic Kingdom alone runs 5+ miles per day. Casual sandals or flip-flops are misery by 2pm.
- •Forgetting Disney resort vs off-site logistics. Resort guests book Lightning Lane 7 days out; off-site guests get 3 days. Plan accordingly.
Notes by where you're traveling from
From the US
- •Domestic — drive or fly into Orlando International (MCO).
- •Disney offers complimentary Mears Connect or Sunshine Flyer airport transfers (paid) — no longer free Magical Express.
- •Tickets cheapest from Undercover Tourist or Disney directly; avoid third-party "deals."
From the UK
- •Flight: 9–10 hours direct from London or Manchester to Orlando.
- •ESTA required: $40.27 (~£32) per person, valid 2 years or until passport expiry. Apply via esta.cbp.dhs.gov — no third-party site is authorized.
- •Adapter: Type G → A/B (US plugs, 120V). Confirm devices are dual-voltage; UK appliances may need a converter, not just an adapter.
- •UK packages from Virgin Holidays, TUI, and BA Holidays often bundle Disney tickets at competitive rates.
From Canada
- •Flight: 3 hours direct from Toronto/Montreal to Orlando.
- •No ESTA required for Canadian passport holders entering the US — passport only.
- •Currency: USD. Apple Pay / contactless cards work everywhere at the parks.
- •Disney prices are in USD; budget for the exchange rate.
From Australia
- •Flight: 22+ hours typically with one stop (LAX or Hawaii common transit).
- •ESTA required: $40.27 (~AU$60) per person, valid 2 years or until passport expiry. Apply via esta.cbp.dhs.gov.
- •Adapter: Type I → A/B (US plugs, 120V). Most modern chargers are dual-voltage; appliances may need a converter.
- •Plan a recovery day at the resort before or after parks — kids hit a jet-lag wall around day 3.
Venue and attraction rules
- All Walt Disney World parks (entry)
- Bag scan at every entrance. 24×15×18 inch limit enforced. Loose ice, glass containers, and weapons refused.
- Magic Kingdom
- Most stroller-friendly; busiest park. Lightning Lane Multi Pass usually pays back here. TRON and Seven Dwarfs are Single Pass.
- EPCOT
- Long walking distances — built for adults. Plan a stroller for younger kids even if they normally walk.
- Disney's Hollywood Studios
- Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge and Toy Story Land draw long lines. Lightning Lane Multi Pass usually pays back here too.
- Animal Kingdom
- Avatar Flight of Passage is the must-do (Lightning Lane Single Pass eligible). Park closes earliest of the four.
- Disney Springs
- Free entry, no ticket required. Bag rules still apply at the security points. Good evening backup if a park day ends early.
- Water parks (Typhoon Lagoon / Blizzard Beach)
- Bring water shoes; the asphalt and concrete get hot enough to burn bare feet. Lockers available for rent.
FAQ
What bag actually fits the 24×15×18 limit?
Most regular school backpacks, diaper bags, and crossbody totes pass with room to spare. The bags that fail are oversized rolling duffels, large hard-sided coolers, and big festival-style backpacks. If your bag is bigger than a standard 30L daypack, measure it before flying.
Are stroller wagons really banned?
Yes, fully — including push-pull hybrids and brands marketed as "stroller wagons." Disney enforces this at every gate, and there is no workaround. If you need a wagon-style for naps, you have three options: bring a standard stroller within 31×52, rent a Disney-approved single or double stroller from third parties (Kingdom Strollers, Magic Strollers), or rent inside the park ($15/day single, $31/day double).
Is Lightning Lane Multi Pass worth it for a family?
Usually yes for Magic Kingdom and Hollywood Studios on busy days. The math: a family of four pays $60–$180/day, but saves 60–120 minutes of standing in queues with kids. Animal Kingdom and EPCOT have shorter waits naturally, so Multi Pass is harder to justify there. Single Pass for TRON or Avatar is also usually worth it on a single-shot ride you really want.
How many days for a first WDW family trip?
Most families do well with 5 park days plus 1 arrival/rest day. That gives roughly 1.5 days at Magic Kingdom, 1 at Hollywood Studios, 1 at EPCOT, 1 at Animal Kingdom, and a flex half-day for a water park or repeat favorite. Less than 4 days makes the trip feel rushed; more than 7 risks park burnout for younger kids.
On-site Disney resort or off-site?
On-site gets you the 7-day Lightning Lane booking window (vs 3 for off-site), early entry on park-opening days, and complimentary transportation. Off-site is usually cheaper and has bigger rooms. For families with younger kids, the on-site logistics simplification often outweighs the price difference; for older kids, off-site can stretch the budget further.
Do we need ESTA from the UK / Canada / Australia / EU?
UK, Australia, and most of Western Europe: yes — ESTA at $40.27 per person, valid 2 years, apply via esta.cbp.dhs.gov. Canada: no ESTA, passport-only entry. Apply at least a few weeks before flying; most ESTA approvals come back within hours but allow up to 72 hours and never use a third-party site (they overcharge for the exact same form).
